A professional pool filter cleaning starts with taking the filter apart. Cartridges come out, get degreased and rinsed at high pressure. A DE filter gets a full tank breakdown: the grids are cleaned and the filter is recharged with fresh DE. Before anything goes back together we check the O-rings, the manifold and the pressure gauge. Then we run the system and test the pressure, so you know it’s filtering the way it should.
A dirty filter makes the pump push against more pressure, so it runs harder to move the same water. That costs electricity and wears the pump out sooner. Clean the filter and the pressure drops back to normal, which you can see on the gauge the same day.

At least every three months for most pools in Orange County, and sooner if you’re under trees or the pool sees heavy use. Cartridges clog fastest in summer, when sunscreen and pollen coat the pleats. A simple rule: note the pressure right after a cleaning, and when the gauge reads 8 to 10 PSI higher than that, it’s time again.
The pressure gauge gives it away first. After that you’ll notice weaker flow from the return jets, water that turns cloudy a day or two after you shock it, and a pump that sounds like it’s working harder than it should. Pollen season and the dust after a Santa Ana wind can push a filter into that state in a couple of weeks.
Most filter cleanings take a few hours, so the pool is back to normal the same day. Book it once when the pressure climbs, or add it to your weekly plan as a seasonal service.

Need it done once? We’ll clean the filter as a one-time service. On a weekly plan it’s a seasonal add-on, and the Paradise plan includes one filter cleaning per calendar year. A clean filter that leaks isn’t much help. While the filter is open we look at the O-rings and the manifold, because a dried-out O-ring is the usual reason a filter drips or pulls air after it goes back together. We also check that the pressure gauge reads true. A stuck gauge hides a clogged filter until the water tells you instead.
Cartridge filter cleaning: we pull the cartridges, degrease them and rinse them at high pressure to get the oils and fine dirt out of the pleats.
DE filter cleaning: we break down the tank, clean the grids and recharge the filter with fresh DE.
Sand filter cleaning: sand filters need the least work, but they still clog. We clean the filter and check the pressure so you know it’s moving water properly.
Orange County’s hard water leaves calcium behind, and it collects in cartridge pleats along with sunscreen oil and pollen. A garden hose moves the loose dirt but not the film underneath, which is why cartridges get degreased rather than just rinsed. If your cartridges look clean but the pressure is still high, that film is usually why.
Sometimes, yes. If you have a cartridge filter and a free afternoon, hosing it off between professional cleanings is fine. A DE filter is a different job: the tank has to come apart, the grids have to go back in the right order, and used DE can’t be rinsed into the street or a storm drain.

Look at the tank and the valve. A sand filter usually has a round tank with a multiport valve on top or on the side. Cartridge and DE filters look similar from the outside, but a DE filter has a backwash valve and needs DE powder added after cleaning. If you’re not sure, send us a photo of the equipment pad.
We take the filter apart and clean every grid and internal part. Cartridges are degreased and rinsed at high pressure, and DE filters are recharged with fresh DE. We check the O-rings, manifold and gauge, reassemble the filter and run a pressure test before we leave.
